The Akaneiro Kicktarter was unusual in that it was for a free-to-play game that was already in beta (or rather would go into open beta a week into the Kickstarter campaign). People must have liked it enough to want to pay more money on something they could already play for free.
The extra funds will allow developer Spicy Horse to fulfill its original ambition for the game and add features such as co-op, crafting, Linux support, and mobile versions.
