[UPDATE] Mortal Kombat X is now officially announced. It's launching in 2015 for unspecified platforms.
The original story is below.
Mortal Kombat fans don't have much longer to wait to hear about the next entry in the esteemed fighting series. In a Twitter exchange with rapper Wiz Khalifa, Mortal Kombat franchise creator Ed Boon said, "On June 2nd, Kombat Kontinues…" with the hashtag "WHOSNEXT." This is the same phrase we saw in a leaked poster last week.
Khalifa originally tweeted, "I am "WHOSNEXT," including Boon's Twitter handle (@noobde) in his tweet. Boon has been counting down to some kind of reveal on June 2 for a long time now.
In addition to the leaked poster, Amazon UK posted (and swiftly removed, but not before MP1st captured an image) product pages for "Mortal Kombat X" for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC. The product pages say the game will be out in 2015.
NetherRealm Studios is presumably the developer for Mortal Kombat X. The Chicago studio's most recent console game was 2013's Injustice: Gods Among Us, while the latest entry in the core Mortal Kombat series was 2011's Mortal Kombat for Xbox 360, PS3, PC, and PlayStation Vita.
Check back later today for the official Mortal Kombat X announcement and all the details.
