To celebrate the 21st anniversary of seminal shooter Doom, originally released on December 10, 1993, designer John Romero today released a trove of rare, behind-the-scenes artwork and images of the game and the people who made it.
The collection includes gems like the one above showing younger versions of Romero and John Carmack, as well as in-game assets that never made it into the final title for various reasons. Romero even reveals some never-before-seen Doom logo tests.
Romero released the images in a series of posts on Twitter today, with captions for some explaining why the asset was memorable or interesting. Check out some of these below, while the image gallery above has even more.
Doom is one of gaming most well-known and influential titles, helping raising the profile of FPS games. The game took a lot of hard work to make, as developers such as Romero, Carmack, and Tom Hall often spent 100+ hour work weeks on it.
A new Doom game is currently in development at id Software for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC, though the game remains mostly a mystery.
