New Asteroids Announced, And It's A PC Online Survival Game

Atari on Tuesday announced Asteroids Outpost, a re-imagining of the classic 1979 game for PC. Dubbed an MMO survival game, Outpost is launching in March on PC through Steam Early Access. Read on for the first details about the project or check out the image gallery above.
Outpost concept artSet in the "distant future," Outpost puts players into a deep space environment. You'll explore sci-fi locations and must embark upon missions to explore the universe to scavenge for and collect resources. Players can also craft equipment--including guns and vehicles--and also work with or against other players online.
In Outpost, you play as a deep space miner, struggling for survival in an asteroid belt. Atari describes Outpost as an open-world game with sandbox and survival elements.
The game also includes some form of head-to-head multiplayer, though Atari didn't go into more detail about it today. And as you'd expect from an Asteroids game, there will be "recurring showers" of asteroids that players must shoot down to defend their bases while also harvesting their components.


“Asteroids is one of the most iconic titles in Atari’s portfolio of more than 200 games and franchises, and we're looking forward to ushering the game into today's digital gaming era," Atari CEO Fred Chesnais said in a statement. "We're paying homage to the original Asteroids by incorporating classic features such as asteroid blasting capabilities, while introducing a completely new premise and gameplay. Asteroids: Outpost will appeal to both fans of the classic Asteroids as well as enthusiasts of immersive survival games and expansive MMOs."
Outpost is in development at Salty Games. Unfortunately, no gameplay for Outpost has been released so far, but you can see some concept art in the gallery above. We'll have more on Outpost as it becomes available.
Asteroids isn't the only classic franchise Atari has resurrected recently. The publisher also not long ago announced plans to bring back the Haunted House and Alone in the Dark franchises.
