  • Xenoblade Chronicles 3D May Not Fit on New 3DS' Included SD Card

A digital copy of New 3DS exclusive Xenoblade Chronicles 3D won't fit on the microSDHC card that the system comes with, Nintendo has announced.
The game's page on Nintendo of America's website alerts prospective eShop customers, "Please note that this title will take up nearly 4GB of space on the New Nintendo 3DS XL system's pre-installed 4GB microSDHC card. You may need to upgrade to a larger memory card to ensure you'll have room for this download and other Nintendo eShop purchases."
Nintendo of Europe's website is much more emphatic that you'll need to upgrade if you intend to download the game: "The download version of Xenoblade Chronicles 3D does not fit on the microSD card included with New Nintendo 3DS and New Nintendo 3DS XL systems: an 8GB or larger microSD card is required to download this game from Nintendo eShop."
This isn't the first time a situation like this has arisen; last year's digital release of Bayonetta and Bayonetta 2 combined to take up more than the Wii U's 32GB hard drive capacity . Prior to that, continued updates for Grand Theft Auto V's online mode outpaced the size of certain PS3 hard drives.
Xenoblade Chronicles 3D is a re-release of Wii RPG Xenoblade Chronicles coming on April 10. It's the first 3DS game that will require the New 3DS in order to play.
If you do plan on downloading the game and haven't yet upgraded your microSD card, you'll have to go through the somewhat arduous process of removing the system's back cover. We outlined how to do so as part of the system transfer process, but be aware you'll need a #0 Phillips screwdriver to get the cover off.
