Best Comic Book Covers This Week
Every Wednesday is new comic book day and hundreds of books hit local shops and the digital market. While many readers pick books based on the creative teams involved or the stories and characters contained within, every comic is trying its best to grasp the consumer's attention with its cover.
Each week, we highlight some of the best comic book cover art from the past week's releases and discuss the artists involved. Here's what caught our eye this week.
Street Fighter x G.I. Joe #2 by Matt Waite
Artist Matt Waite is known for his pixelized comic book covers. This past week, he took his signature style and used it for the cover of Street Fighter X G.I. Joe #2. Ryu blasts away with a hadoken, while Snake Eyes tries to jump kick him. However, they're in Guile's level. This cover has a great sense of fun and nostalgia.
Batman '66 Meets The Man From U.N.C.L.E. #10 by Michael Allred
There is no one else we could see doing the covers for Batman '66 than Michael Allred. This cover has a real tongue-and-cheek feel to it, hearkening back to The Batman Movie, where Batman fought off a shark with a bottle of bat-shark repellant. Allred's style is fitting and fun for this cover.
Grimm Tales of Terror #6 by Antonio Bifulco & Alessia Nocera
The Internet loves cats, right? Well, this cover of Grimm Tales of Terror should tickle your cat fancy. Antonio Bifulco & Alessia Nocera deliver a cover that's simple on the surface, but it is full of complexities within the shading and coloring, especially when the subject had two different light sources on it, both on the right and far-left side of the cat's face.
Postal #11 by Linda Luksic Šeji?
The cover of Postal #11 shows that you can create a cover that doesn't seem to have much going on in it, but it tells a complete story. Look at the blood on the railroad tracks, which lead off into the distance. Sejic creates a haunting, beautiful piece here, as most covers for this series have been.
Daredevil #5 by Sara Pichelli & Justin Ponsor
Sara Pichelli & Justin Ponsor are an incredible team of artists, currently working on Spider-Man at Marvel. For the next month, Marvel is delivering a month of variants featuring "Women of Power," and this issue of Daredevil features Elektra, a very important person in Matt Murdock's life. The cover has a great perspective and the colorwork is outstanding.
Captain America: Sam Wilson #7 by Alex Ross
Recreating the cover to Captain America #1 from way back in 1974, artist Alex Ross painted this stunning variant this week. It contains everything from the original cover but in Ross's signature, highly-detailed style.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Deviations #1 by Zack Howard
The Ninja Turtles are back, but this time, they are working for the Foot Clan, directly under Shredder. Zack Howard gives this cover an interesting layout which delivers a great sense of movement as the Turtles fall into the action.
Suiciders: Kings of HelL.A. #1 by Lee Bermejo
Lee Bermejo has a distinctive artistic style that bridges the gap between comics and realism. The newest volume of Suiciders features a slew of characters ready for action, and Bermejo really nails the color work on the cover, especially if you pay close attention to lightsource here.
