  • Finding Dory Beats "Disappointing" Independence Day: Resurgence at US Box Office

The numbers are in, and Pixar's Finding Dory ruled the weekend at the US box office. In its second weekend in theaters, the animated movie brought in $73.2 million Friday-Sunday, becoming the No. 1 movie of the weekend. Fox's Independence Day: Resurgence, which opened this weekend, made a "disappointing" $41.6 million, according to Variety.
The site said forecasts for Resurgence said the movie would bank around $50 million, matching the opening weekend for the 1996 Will Smith-starring original. Given that Resurgence pulled in $41.6 million, it missed projections by about 20 percent.
Resurgence had a projected budget of $165 million. Internationally, the movie made $102 million from 57 markets for its opening, meaning the film has already brought in more than $143 million worldwide.
Finding Dory already broke an animated film record for best opening weekend ever last week. Ticket sales declined only 46 percent for the second weekend, helping the movie enjoy the eighth-highest second weekend in history, pulling ahead of Captain America: Civil War. When comparing only against animated movies, Finding Dory had the best second weekend ever.
Head to Variety to see a full breakdown of this weekend's box office numbers.
