  • Game of Thrones Season 7 Release Date, Possible Spinoff Discussed by Creators

In the past, new seasons of Game of Thrones have debuted in March/April. However, it sounds like Season 7 is going to come later--though there is a good reason.
Showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss said in a recent interview that Season 7 is likely to debut later than usual because, for story purposes, the production company doesn't want to film in sunny summer.
"We don't have an air date yet, but this year will probably be a little bit later," they said on the latest UFC Unfiltered podcast, as reported by Digital Spy. "We're starting a bit later because at the end of this season, 'Winter is here'--and that means that sunny weather doesn't really serve our purposes anymore. So we kind of pushed everything down the line so we could get some grim, gray weather even in the sunnier places that we shoot."
It's not immediately clear which location the showrunners are referring to, but some of the show's famous filming spots include Northern Ireland and Croatia.
Season 7 is expected to debut in 2017, with an eighth and potentially final season presumably premiering the next year. Benioff and Weiss have talked about how Seasons 7 and 8 may be shorter than the rest, spanning 13 episodes between them; all previous seasons had 10 episodes.
Also on the podcast, Benioff and Weiss said it's possible Game of Thrones could live on after the HBO show wraps up through a prequel or some other extension of the series. They praised the world and characters George R.R. Martin created, saying it's a fertile ground for lots of stories in the future, but stressed that they are only focusing on Game of Thrones right now.
"We think about thinking about it, but once we start thinking about it, we realize we have other things that are immediately pressing that we need to be thinking about today," they said.
"One of the great things about what [George R.R. Martin] did is he didn't just build a story; he built a world with so many characters and such a rich, detailed history behind it," the pair explained. "There are a lot of different ways you could go with it; we just really haven't had time to really think through the details of it because we're so focused on getting the show made."
The Season 6 finale, "The Winds of Winter," aired on June 26 and set a ratings record. For more, you can watch the latest episode of GameSpot of Thrones, where our editors analyze the events, discuss potential consequences, and make a few predictions.
