  • Captain Marvel Director Shortlist Narrows

The shortlist for directors to helm the upcoming Captain Marvel has been narrowed to three names. It has been reported that Marvel's first female-led superhero movie has a trio of contenders from the world of TV and independent cinema.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the main contenders to direct Captain Marvel are Lesli Linka Glatter, Niki Caro, and Lorene Scafaria. Glatter is an experienced TV director, having worked on the likes of Homeland, True Blood, Mad Men, ER, and The West Wing. Caro is best known for the Oscar-nominated drama Whale Rider, while Scafaria helmed this year's The Meddler, plus the Keira Knightley-starring drama Seeking a Friend for the End of the World.
Marvel has made a point of seeking a female director for the movie. THR states that other directors the studio considered included Jennifer Kent (The Babadook) and Jennifer Yuh (Kung Fu Panda 2.)
Last month, it was confirmed that Brie Larson will play Captain Marvel. Larson won the Best Actress award at this year's Oscars for her performance in the drama Room, and is also known for supporting roles in Scott Pilgrim vs The World and 21 Jump Street.
Captain Marvel was originally scheduled for a July 2018 release, before being moved back to make way for Spider-Man: Homecoming and Ant-Man and the Wasp. It is now set to hit cinemas in March 2019.
Captain Marvel has been the name of various heroes over the years. The current incarnation, and the one expected to feature in the film, is the alter ego of Carol Danvers. Danvers previously used the name of Ms Marvel and first appeared in her own comic book in 1977, before taking the identity of Captain Marvel in 2012.
