Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has discussed the upcoming Han Solo Star Wars movie and the company's drive to find a female director for a future movie in the popular sci-fi series.
Speaking to Variety, Kennedy said the untitled Han Solo movie may be tonally similar to a heist-themed movie or a western. "This moves closer to a heist or Western type feel," Kennedy said. She added that the movie's producers have used the paintings of American Old West artist Frederic Remington, specifically his use of primary colors, as a reference point for the "look and feel of the film."
The Han Solo movie is expected to premiere in 2018. It stars Alden Ehrenreich (Hail Caesar!) as young Han Solo, alongside Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian. Chewbacca will also be in the movie, while Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke was recently added to the cast as well.
Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (21 Jump Street, The Lego Movie) are directing the film.
Also in the Variety interview, Kennedy talked about Lucasfilm's ambition to have a woman direct a Star Wars movie someday. "We want to make sure that when we bring a female director in to do Star Wars, they're set up for success," she said. "They're gigantic films, and you can't come into them with essentially no experience."
In October 2015, Kennedy said she's sure she'll eventually find a female director. "It is going to happen," she promised. "We are going to hire a woman who's going to direct a Star Wars movie. I have no doubt."
The next Star Wars movie is Rogue One, which comes out on December 16. The movie is projected to make around $130 million for its opening weekend in the US, which would be good for the second-biggest December opening in US history, behind only 2015's The Force Awakens.
