Ninja Theory, the studio behind Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice, has released a new developer diary detailing the game's sound design and, specifically, how it is being used to depict the voices protagonist Senua hears in her head.
Hearing voices is one of the ways Ninja Theory is exploring mental health, which is a core theme of Hellblade. The video shows the development team consulted with people that have grappled with hearing voices in the past, as well as experts in the field of psychology and mental health.
Among the ways the studio is integrating its research into the game is by using binaural audio, which allows for multiple different voices to be positioned in a space, thus better reflecting the experience of hearing things.
Check out the video above and listen with a pair of headphones to get a taste of the disturbing voices that'll be in the game.
As previously announced, Hellblade will be available on PS4 and PC. It does not have a release date yet.
