  • 20 Winter Movies We're Really Excited For

While the months of December through February are mainly known as Oscar-season, when all the Academy Award contenders are released in theaters, there are still a lot of great movies coming out. Obviously, not all of these film picks for the winter season are going to win an award, but here are some upcoming films we can't wait to see, and one film we've been waiting all year for: Rogue One.

    Pet

In Pet, a man stalks and kidnaps a woman, putting her in a large, homemade cage in his basement. However, the woman he kidnapped is a fighter, physically and mentally. The trailers looks dark and disturbing. It'll be interesting to see Dominic Monaghan (Lord of the Rings) playing the bad guy, in what looks like to be a solid horror film to kick off December.
    Pet opens on December 2.

    Siren

In Siren, a bachelor party looks for something exciting to do and heads to a house off the beaten path, where debauchery awaits. What they find inside is a woman locked up who is some sort of monster. Fans of the first V/H/S may feel this story feels familiar with good reason because Siren is a feature-length version of the "Amateur Night" story from the 2012 horror anthology. Check out the trailer for yourself.
    Siren opens on December 2.

    The Eyes of My Mother

There have been a couple of trailers for The Eyes of My Mother, and the latest one is pretty tough to watch and disturbing. In Portugal, a woman who used to be a surgeon teaches her young daughter about anatomy and to be unfazed by death. A man visits their farmhouse, and the daughter decides to start using what she's learned about the human body and surgery on the man. The trailers don't give too much away, but this film looks spooky.
The Eyes of My Mother opens December 2.

    Friend Request

On the more "fun" side of horror, Friend Request looks like the distant cousin of the film Unfriended. A college student accepts the friend request of a classmate, who has no friends. This new friend gets jealous, kills herself, and begins to haunt and kill everyone. This isn't a life-changing horror film, but it looks like a lot of fun.
Friend Request opens on December 9.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

The movie we've been waiting all year for is finally here! Rogue One: A Star Wars Story takes place right before A New Hope and follows the Rebellion as they go on a mission to steal the plans for the Death Star. A new video feature gets a bit more into the story. It's Star Wars. We're all going to see it.
Star Wars: A Rogue One Story opens on December 16.

    Passengers

After you've seen Rogue One five times, make sure to check out Passengers. Inside a spaceship on a 120-year journey, two of the passengers (Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt) in cryosleep wake up 90 years too early. It's crazy to think we're getting two big-budget science fiction films in less than a week, and Passengers looks pretty amazing, mixing sci-fi and romance.
Passengers opens on Wednesday, December 21.

    Assassin's Creed

It's time, once again, for another video game franchise to make its way to the big screen. Video game movies don't have the best track record, but Assassin's Creed looks like a lot of fun. Michael Fassbender plays Callum Lynch, who explores his ancestor's memories, the master assassin Aguilar. Fassbener will by playing Lynch as well as his ancestor. It's a story fans of the video game series are familiar with, so this film should be a warm, nostalgic hug.
Assassin's Creed opens on December 21.

    Why Him?

Ned Fleming (Bryan Cranston) and his family go and meet his daughter's boyfriend (James Franco), and the love of his daughter's life is not what he had in mind. Why Him? may seem like a story we've seen time and time again, but the trailers (especially this NSFW one) are hilarious. Cranston and Franco play well off each other, and this looks like the best comedy coming to theaters in December.
Why Him? opens on December 23.

    Underworld: Blood Wars

If there's one thing the Underworld series taught us it's that vampires and werewolves do not get along. Selene (Kate Beckinsale) is back, and once again, trying to end the war between the lycans and vampires for what could be the last time. This isn't going to be a huge, money-making film, and it's not going to win any awards, but it does look like a good movie to enjoy that takes no effort to watch.
Underworld: Blood Wars opens on January 6.

    Amityville: The Awakening

Another family is about to make a terrible mistake by living in the Amityville house. The newest movie in the horror-franchise takes place in present day when a young woman (Bella Thorne) and her family move into the iconic house, unaware of the horrific murders that took place decades prior. Check out the trailer to see what the newest Amityville movie has to offer.
Amityville: The Awakening opens on January 6.

    The Bye Bye Man

The Bye Bye Man adds a little bit of a new twist to the supernatural slasher genre. From what we gather from the trailer, this film is about a ghostly force that appears more frequently the more you talk about it or think about it. This seems like a pretty cool concept and a fun horror film with a whole bunch of jump scares.
The Bye Bye Man opens on January 13.

XXX 3: The Return of Xander Cage

Vin Diesel returns as Xander Cage to do backflips on bikes and other X-Games-type maneuvers in XXX 3. The trailer makes this look like a high-octane thrill ride featuring Diesel skateboarding and wall-riding a bus, skiing through a forest, and a guy dropkicking someone on a motorcycle. Does it look silly and way over-the-top? Yes, but we expect nothing less from this franchise.
XXX 3: The Return of Xander Cage opens on January 20.

    Renegades

Over the past decade, we've seen quite a few films come out about the United States military. They've all been pretty serious films, so when we first saw that the trailer for Renegades, we were pleasantly surprised at the comedic elements. A group of Navy SEALs discovers gold at the bottom of a lake in Europe. They put together a heist to return to gold to its rightful owners but find there is someone else hot on their tails. The movie looks really entertaining, and one of the better films of January.
    Renegades opens on January 27.

    Resident Evil: The Final Chapter

Understandably, the Resident Evil film series has little to nothing to do with the games. It's like someone read the Cliffs Notes of the first few minutes of the first game and said, "We'll take it from here." Regardless, the newest Resident Evil movie, which is supposedly the final chapter, looks like your typical action film, with lots of things blowing up and Milla Jovovich--who is reprising her role as Alice--shooting everything in sight. She's also going to stop the T-Virus in this one too, but those of us who are going to see it just want to see pure action for an hour and a half.
Resident Evil: The Final Chapter opens on January 27.

    Rings

If it feels we've already talked about Rings and told you we're excited to see it, it's because we did. The film was originally supposed to come out in November 2015. Then, it was pushed back to April. Then, it was pushed back to October 28. Now, it's coming out in February 2017. While that may not bode well for the film, since movies that get delayed this long tend to be stinkers, we're still excited to see how Samara's murderous video works in a truly digital age.
Rings finally opens on February 3.

    LEGO Batman Movie

The LEGO Movie was delightful. One of the standout performances was Will Arnett as Batman, so they gave him his own movie. Chris McKay (Robot Chicken) is directing this new film which follows Batman as he deals with a young boy he adopted: Robin. If the trailer doesn't make you giggle, there may be something wrong. The LEGO Batman Movie takes the iconic, sometimes grim, character of Batman and lightens him up. It's like reverse-Batman v. Superman!
LEGO Batman Movie opens on February 10.

    John Wick: Chapter 2

If LEGO Batman isn't up your alley, then the sequel to one of the best action films in the past decade is here. John Wick is back and the trailer seems to follow in the footsteps of the original. Wick will be shooting his way around the world, but this time, he has a new dog. There isn't a lot on the net, at this time, about the plot, but it doesn't matter. The movie is going to be amazing.
John Wick: Chapter 2 opens on February 10.

    The Great Wall

Matt Damon's character heads to China and finds that the Great Wall wasn't built to stop hordes of Mongolian warriors: it was built to stop monsters. This is Yimou Zhang's (House of Flying Daggers) first English-language production, and the trailer looks beautiful. Zhang's films are cinematic eye-candy mixed with some high-wire martial arts. While the concept of the story may seem a tad out-there, The Great Wall looks awesome.
The Great Wall opens on February 17.

    Get Out

Jordan Peele (Key & Peele) is moving away from his comedic roots to write and direct the upcoming horror film Get Out. A black man, Chris, visits his white girlfriend's family, and there is something sinister going on: her family seems to be kidnapping people. The trailer gets a little bit more detailed about the horrors that happen to Chris down the road. This looks like an intense film and is one of the films we're most excited about this season, right behind Star Wars, John Wick, and our last pick.
Get Out opens on February 24.

    God Particle

God Particle is the third film in the Cloverfield series, which was revealed recently by TheWrap. Like most Bad Robot films, there's a lot of secrecy about this movie, and chances are, it might even get a title change before coming out. There are no posters and no trailers for the film. However, we do know that a group of astronauts that make a discovery which alters reality. Considering that 10 Cloverfield Lane was one of the better films of 2016, we're really pumped for this one.
God Particle opens on February 24.
