  • What Could Star Wars: The Last Jedi's Title Mean?

Disney and Lucasfilm have released the title of the next Star Wars film. Episode VIII will officially be called "The Last Jedi." It's known that the movie will begin immediately after the events of The Force Awakens, and it will be darker and bigger.
With this being the only piece of concrete information available, there is speculation as to what the title means and why red was used for the text.
We may not have the answers, but we definitely have some questions and ideas for what this could mean.
    Who Is The Last Jedi?

In the opening crawl for The Force Awakens, Luke Skywalker is referred to as "the last Jedi." With the tiny role he had, perhaps the next movie will emphasize his journey and return. He's had plenty of time to contemplate any failures he feels he may be responsible for with Kylo Ren.
If Luke is the last one, what does that mean for Rey?
    Is Jedi Singular or Plural?

Does the title suggest there will only be one single Jedi left? A common debate has been: Is Jedi singular or plural? In Attack of the Clones, Mace Windu mentions Jedi as plural. With this being the case, the title could mean we will see Luke, Rey, and anyone else that is Force-sensitive rise up to fight Kylo Ren, Supreme Leader Snoke, the First Order, evil renegade Ewoks, or any other threats to the galaxy. The title doesn't have to imply there will be only one Jedi left.
    Unless...
    What Does The Red Mean?

This isn't the first time red has been used for a Star Wars logo. Return of the Jedi and Revenge of the Sith both used the color. What's different this time is, those two movies were the conclusion of their trilogies. That isn't the case with Episode VIII. Those movies did feature major deaths. Jedi saw the death of Darth Vader and Yoda. Sith saw the "death" of Anakin as well as Padme. Despite the major death is The Force Awakens, it's possible this could be the end of the road for Luke. These movies may be paving the way for the next generation of characters to take the center stage.
It's possible the Spanish title of the movie could answer whether or not the focus will be on one or more Jedi. We'll have to wait for more information or the first trailer to be released in order to get a better idea.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi will be in theaters on December 15, 2017.
