  • Stranger Things Season 2 Plot Details And New Images Revealed

[UPDATE] Entertainment Weekly also has a batch of new images from Season 2--see them all here.
We've known for a long time now that Stranger Things Season 2 will take place just a year after Season 1, in the aftermath of some seriously traumatic events. But now we know a lot more about the plot for the upcoming season, which premieres on Halloween this year.
SPOILERS FOR STRANGER THINGS SEASON 1 FOLLOW BELOW
Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) was rescued from the Upside Down at the end of Season 1. It seemed like he was OK, but the final episode showed him coughing up a slug and lying to his mother and brother about it. Co-creator Matt Duffer told Entertainment Weekly that Will is experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder. "He seems to be seeing images from the Upside Down--the question is whether they’re real or not."
Will's mother, Joyce (Winona Ryder), is trying to make things right again for Will and his brother Jonathan (Charlie Heaton). In Season 2, Joyce is dating Bob (Sean Astin), who was a high school classmate of hers. "She's trying to mask a lot," Ryder said. "I think she's made this choice with Bob because she wants a good father figure in her sons' lives."
As for police chief Hopper (David Harbour), in Season 2 he is forced to lie to cover things up, which weighs heavily on him. "It kind of falls on Hopper to be the voice of authority to say, 'This did happen and this didn't happen,’" Harbour said.
Mike (Finn Wolfhard) and Nancy (Natalia Dyer) are mourning the apparent deaths of their friends Barb (Shannon Purser) and Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown); Barb is definitely dead, but Eleven may still be alive.
As for other new characters, the brother-sister pair Billy (Dacre Montgomery) and Max (Sadie Sink) come to the show for Season 2. Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin) and Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) are romantically interested in Max. Billy might be a bad guy.
"Stephen King always has really great human villains," Matt Duffer teased. "The evil in the real world is often as bad or worse than the supernatural evil, so we wanted to introduce a character like that."
Elsewhere, Aliens actor Paul Reiser joins Stranger Things Season 2 to play Dr. Owens, who is now in charge of the Upside Down rift at the lab, which is still open. At the end of Season 1, the monster was defeated, but if the Season 2 trailer is anything to go on, there are other monstrous forces in the world. Matt Duffer teased that Season 2 will feature "different kinds of horror."
Finally, we learn that Dustin gets an alien polliwog-like pet. "It's obviously not from this planet or this dimension," he said.
