HBO's popular fantasy show Game of Thrones wraps up next year with its eighth and final season, and the network is doing something special as a sendoff. A Game of Thrones reunion special featuring past and present Game of Thrones actors is coming. HBO shot the special in Belfast earlier this year, and comedian/late night host Conan O'Brien hosted.
The untitled Game of Thrones special won't air on HBO, however. EW reports it'll actually be available through a brand-new home video box set featuring Seasons 1-8. This package is set to launch sometime in 2019 after the final season wraps up.
According to EW, the cast of the final Game of Thrones season was "heavily involved" with the reunion special. Additionally, Sean Bean, who played Ned Stark in Season 1, will be featured in the special. EW reports that Khal Drogo actor Jason Momoa traveled to Belfast this year, but it might have only been as a personal visit as a fan of the show.
It remains to be seen if HBO will release the reunion special outside of the box set. Keeping it exclusive to the box set, at least for a period of time, would be an understandable business move.
Game of Thrones Season 8 is set to premiere in April 2019, and the final season will have "surprises and shocking moments."
While Game of Thrones is ending, HBO is producing a spinoff that begins production in 2019. Naomi Watts is set to play one of the leads, while more casting details have also come to light.
