Wrestlemania 35: Women's Main Event Crowns New Champion
At MetLife Stadium on Sunday, April 7, Ronda Rousey, Becky Lynch, and Charlotte Flair competed in a Triple Threat for the Raw and Smackdown Women's Championships during Wrestlemania 35. And after a historical main event--this is the first time that women have ever main-evented the WWE PPV in its 35-year history--Becky Lynch emerged victorious.
The match started out a little sloppy, but once everyone's nerves settled, the match fell into a nice groove—quick-paced and athletic, but with plenty of brutality, including a table spot in the corner of the ring. The finish saw Lynch reverse Rousey's secondary finisher, Piper's Pit, into a Crucifix Pin.
The match caps what's been a three-year "Evolution," which saw the WWE women's division slowly transition from a side act to the men's division, to competitors in their own right.
Progress was slow but incremental. The women were once referred to as Divas; WWE dropped that moniker as well as the bikini contests, bra-and-panties showdowns, and 5-minute matches that long characterized the division. And things had been changing for awhile behind the scenes as well: NXT hired indie sensation Sara Amato in 2012 to specifically develop the women's division.
But it wasn't until the fans rebelled and started hashtagging #GiveDivasAChance in 2015, that things started changing, booking-wise, on main roster shows Raw and Smackdown. And once they were given the chance to show what they could do, the women, led by the efforts of "Four Horsewomen" Charlotte Flair, Becky Lynch, Sasha Banks, and Bayley, rose to the challenge.
