  • Summer Games Done Quick 2024 is over for another year, raising £1.9m ($2.5m) for the charity Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières.
That brings the speedrunning organiser's lifetime total to a staggering £40m/$51m across all its events for charities like AbleGamers, Doctors Without Borders, Organisation for Autism Research, Malala Fund, National Women's Law Center, and Prevent Cancer Foundation.
Running 24-hours a day from 30th June to 6th July in Minnesota – and broadcast across the world on Games Done Quick's Twitch channel – the in-person event was "filled with delightful moments", including everyone's favourite pup Peanut Butter playing Ken Griffey Jr. Presents Major League Baseball.

    • Publisher Paradox Interactive has delayed Cities: Skylines 2's console release once again.
The game was initially slated to arrive on Xbox Series X/S and PS5 alongside PC in October last year. However, this date got moved to spring, before getting bumped back again to October of this year. At this time, the team said it had been "struggling to get Cities: Skylines 2 to the necessary level of optimisation for a console release".
Now, the game's console launch isn't going to be in October either, as the team has "not yet met the stability and performance targets" it had set for Xbox and PlayStation.

      • Microsoft has confirmed sweeping changes - including price increases - to its Xbox Game Pass subscription service in the run-up to October's launch of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, which will include the removal of day one releases for its overhauled basic tier.

As reported by Windows Central, which says Microsoft has now confirmed the details, the first big Game Pass change comes with the imminent closure of the $10.99/month Xbox Game Pass for Console. While this will continue to be available to existing members until their subscription expires (notably, from 12th September, Microsoft will only allow users to stack Game Pass for Console for up to 13 months), new users looking for a basic tier package will need to subscribe to Xbox Game Pass Standard, which launches in September.

This costs $14.99/month and includes Xbox Live Gold for multiplayer gaming, plus access to Xbox's back catalogue - but not, crucially, access to first-party releases on day one. That means console players wanting to play Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 via Game Pass when it launches on 25th October will need to subscribe to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.

        • By now, you've probably heard of massive Fallout 4 mod Fallout: London, given the struggles it's faced in the run-up to release. There's one last hurdle for players to overcome, however, with developer Team Folon having now confirmed it'll be necessary to downgrade Fallout 4's next-gen version to play it - a process thankfully being handled by its accompanying installer.

Fallout 4's long-promised next-gen update finally launched in April, but its arrival caused some major headaches for the Fallout: London team. The mod was originally due to launch on 23rd April, but it was delayed after Bethesda announced Fallout 4's next-gen update would arrive two days later - Team Folon admitting it was concerned about potential "complications". And with good reason, it turns out; Team Folon has now confirmed a downgrade from the next-gen version of Fallout 4 will be absolutely necessary to run Fallout: London.

A downgrader was briefly mentioned in a statement the developer shared over the weekend, but its inclusion wasn't really detailed at the time. However, in a follow-up message on Fallout: London's Discord (via Ars Technica), project lead Dean Carter explained, "At the 11th hour we've discovered that the next-gen [version of Fallout 4], even after updates, isn't stable enough and thus we are now going out on the old version - thus the need for a downgrader."

          • Riot Games was reportedly developing a Smash Bros. style fighter set in the League of Legends universe, but pulled the plug on the project earlier this year after perceiving Warner Bros' Smash-inspired MultiVersus to have been a commercial failure.

That's according to former Washington Post video games and esports editor Mikhail Klimentov, who - writing in his ReaderGrev newsletter - claims 70-80 Riot employees were working on the Smash-style platform fighter, codenamed Pool Party.

Citing current and former Riot employees familiar with the project, Klimnetov says Pool Party was initially envisaged as a hardcore fighting game but grew to incorporate party game elements and casual-friendly mechanics as development continued.

            • UPDATE 11/7/24: Following yesterday's Famitsu reveal, Arc System Works has released a trailer for Double Dragon Revive, the first 3D take on the long-running beat-'em-up series.

As per the accompanying English press release, Double Dragon Revive promises "renewed, stylish character graphics" with arcade favourites recreated in 3D, plus the "ultimate belt-scroll experience", and "thrilling strategic action".

"Experience the same simple and intuitive gameplay," the studio writes, "with controls and balance refined for the modern era." It adds that combat will require "adaptation and variety, more than a simple button-masher", requiring players to "delve into the strategy by learning enemy patterns and finding the most effective attack timings." There's also promise of weapons and area gimmicks enabling players to "seize the upper hand in battle".

                • As an old person who's still not over the novelty of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles being allowed to be called the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in the UK without anyone getting funny about the word "ninja", it'd be fair to say I'm a little behind on the franchise. So the news there's a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game out this October based on a movie I didn't know existed using an art style I'm totally unfamiliar with has brought a whole succession of revelations.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants Unleashed, as the game is known, was actually announced earlier this year, but developer A Heartful of Games and publisher Outright Games have now released a first trailer, which you can see below. Mutants Unleashed - a "story-driven 3D brawler/platformer" - is coming to PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, and PC, and promises "action-packed combat, hilarious teen spirit, and a whole load of pizza" as Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo, and Donatello traverse an "immersive" New York City.

You'll be able to "skate through the streets, grind on rails, and zipline between buildings amid a dynamic night and day cycle" as the gang hunts collectibles and embarks on missions set after the events of this year's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem movie. Series regulars like Master Splinter, April, Bebop, and Rocksteady will also pop in to say hello.

                  • Following its half-hearted, widely derided stab at an esports event in 2023, the International Olympic Committee has announced the inaugural Olympic Esports Games in partnership with the Saudi Arabian Olympic & Paralympic Committee, to be held in Saudi Arabia next year.

Tethering its future esports success to a regime that's been widely criticised for its poor human rights record - which includes the criminalisation of homosexuality, fewer rights for women, and the use of the death penalty - is certainly a bold opening move for the IOC, but not unexpected given the Saudi government's heavy financial investment in esports over the last few years.

Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth Public Investment Fund is, for instance, financing this year's Esports World Cup, and its involvement has continued to cause controversy. Apex Legends fans expressed disappointment when the game was confirmed to be part of the Esports World Cup earlier this year, for instance, with many noting the battle royale game's inclusive outlook was deeply at odds with the Saudi government's anti-LGBTQ+ stance.

                      • Dying Light 2 developer Techland has requested that the majority of staff – including employees who work abroad – come into the office full-time or commit to a "hybrid" model.
The studio says it needs people to come into the office "regularly to foster stronger connections".
According to Polish site CD-Action, "regularly" equates to eight working days every two months. The outlet also alleges that line managers were given less than 24 hours notice to cascade the news to their direct reports.

                          • 80s movie favourite The Karate Kid is being turned into a 16-bit-style side-scrolling beat-'em-up, and it's heading to PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, and PC on 20th September this year.

The Karate Kid: Street Rumble comes from GameMill Entertainment, the publisher behind Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl, and is firmly setting its sights on the 80s era of Karate Kid rather than Netflix's Cobra Kai continuation - which has already spawned two games itself.

Street Rumble is, somewhat surprisingly, only the third game to be directly based on the 80s movie series - the first, Atlus' NES action game The Karate Kid, arrived in 1987, and Microdeals' The Karate Kid 2 hit the Amiga and Atari ST in 1986. This new outing, though, promises to feature a whole bunch of familiar faces as its 80s-set mulitplayer action unfolds.

                              • As Fallout 4's massive Fallout: London mod nears its release, distributor GOG has moved to clear up some compatibility questions. The company has confirmed Fallout: London will work with versions of Fallout 4 bought on GOG and Steam, but not those purchased on the Epic Games Store, as the latter doesn't currently support a key feature needed to get it running.

If you're not up to date on its progress, Fallout: London - which, as its name suggests, enables players to quest around a post-apocalyptic open-world version of the UK's capital - has hit a few snags on the road to its release. Specifically, developer Team Folon has run into issues getting it to work with Fallout 4's recently released next-gen update.

Team Folon made the decision to delay Fallout: London back in April, anticipating the mod might run into "complications" when Bethesda's next-gen update arrived - and the decision proved wise. Last week, after some testing, the developer confirmed Fallout 4's next-gen update simply "isn't stable enough" to run Fallout: London right now, and that the mod would be shipping with a downgrader to revert Fallout 4 to an older version.
