  • Sorry folks, there's "no chance" of forthcoming PlayStation 5 exclusive Astro Bot coming to PS VR2.

The creative director of the much-anticipated colourful platformer, Nicolas Doucet, was interview by MinnMax with 176 rapid-fire questions about the game.

When asked if there's a chance this Astro Bot could come to PS VR2, Doucet replied simply: "no chance, it's designed for a different medium".

    • A number of Star Wars Outlaws players have been advised to restart their game with a new save file to avoid problems with progression.
Ubisoft last night emailed some PlayStation 5 players asking them to update their copy of Outlaws to the latest version, following a chunky bug-busting patch.
"To best experience the Outer Rim, we rolled out a maintenance to make sure everyone is playing the latest version of the game," Ubisoft's email reads. "As one of the players affected who had access to an older version of the game, we are aware you might be encountering some issues after this recent patch. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused."

      • Stardew Valley creator Eric 'ConcernedApe' Barone wants to do a crossover with Fortnite.

Specifically, he wants to see Pam - the farming sim's alcohol-drinking bus driver - in the online shooter, though he's "open to anything".

Barone discussed the crossover in a Discord conversation shared on X (formerly Twitter) by Panedwards, where he was asked "would you be willing to ever do a Fortnite crossover?"

        • Bandai Namco will shut down the servers of its anime MMORPG Blue Protocol in Japan and has cancelled its release in the West.

Blue Protocol was released in Japan in June 2023, with the forthcoming western release managed by Amazon Games.

However, in a new statement from the developers on the game's website, the "difficult decision" has been made to end service as "it will not be possible to provide a service that satisfies all of you".

          • Genshin Impact 5.0 has brought Natlan, widening the world of Teyvat to include its sixth region, as part of the 'Flowers Resplendent on the Sun-Scorched Sojourn' update.
Natlan is available to everyone who's completed the Mondstadt Archon Quests; meaning, even if you're a Genshin Impact newbie, you can still travel beyond the Sumeru desert to the Nation of Pyro. Though, if you want to explore its storyline, you'll have to be Adventure Rank 28 or higher and have completed all of Liyue's Archon Quests.
When journeying across Natlan, you'll encounter the tribes who make their home there and live alongside the Saurians - creatures who are also known as the dragons of Natlan. While there are six tribes in total, only three are available upon Genshin 5.0's release and you'll be able to learn more about them through the Tribal Chronicles. Replacing Story Quests, the Tribal Chronicles offer you the chance to learn more about each tribe through completing a three act quest.

            • When Dawntrail, the latest expansion for MMORPG Final Fantasy 14, was released back in June, it marked the start of a new story arc. After a decade of growing popularity across multiple expansions telling a singular narrative, Dawntrail brought players to a brand new world with new characters and a fresh graphical update.

It was met with a somewhat mixed reaction. While the visuals and music are as gorgeous as ever, the storytelling was criticised by some for being meandering with its shallow first half, and many of its familiar characters (the Scions) are given considerably less screen time.

Yet Final Fantasy 14 remains a spectacularly popular game, its players always eager for new content. Naoki Yoshida, the game's producer and director, is a beloved figure in the game's community and - through livestreams and Fan Fest events - is in direct communication with players.

              • Final Fantasy 14 producer and director Naoki Yoshida has said Square Enix would like to "further deepen the relationship with Xbox gamers" following the release of the MMORPG on Microsoft's console.

The game's arrival on Xbox was announced at the Final Fantasy 14 Fan Fest in Las Vegas last year, where Xbox boss Phil Spencer took to the stage. It then released on 21st March, with latest expansion Dawntrail being the first to release alongside PC and PlayStation.

Speaking to Eurogamer at Gamescom, Yoshida noted players have been "waiting a long time for the Xbox release" but it's had "a really strong response" with communities growing on the platform.

                • Sony has announced a significant price hike for PlayStation 5 in Japan, which will see the cost of the console's standard and Digital Editions rise by ¥13,000 (around £70).

Announcing the news in a post on its Japanese PlayStation Blog, Sony blamed the price hike (as per Google Translate) on "the recent challenging external environment, including the current fluctuations in the global economic situation, and the impact it will have on our business".

When its new prices come into effect on 2nd September, the disc version of PlayStation 5 will increase from ¥66,980 (around £350) to ¥79,980 (around £420). As for the disc-free Digital Edition, it'll see its price rise from ¥59,980 (£314) to ¥72,980 (£380).

                  • Balatro, the acclaimed poker-themed rogue-like that continues to haunt my dreams, has just released a free update for PC and consoles introducing a bunch of cosmetic cameos from the likes of The Witcher, Vampire Survivors, Dave the Diver, and Among Us.

Balatro's Friends of Jimbo update is available now and gives player the option to swap out the game's usual Kings, Queens, and Jacks with characters from the aforementioned series. So if you'd like to spice up a run with, say, a beaming Jaskier or a vampire from the infamously vampire-free Vampire Survivors, today's your lucky day.

In a post shared on Steam, developer LocalThunk explained Friends of Jimbo is the second of three big Balatro announcements due this summer, with the first being the recent news of a free major gameplay update - promising "new ideas and strategies" - that's currently due next year.

                    • Clive Sinclair's ZX Spectrum is a truly iconic bit of 80s computer design, and readers of a certain age will have the opportunity to relive a youth spent palpating its rubber keys this November, when it returns to homes - with a bunch of included classic games and modern niceties thrown in - courtesy of Retro Games, the team behind this year's Atari 400 Mini.

The Spectrum (as Retro Games is calling its new bit of old-school-inspired hardware) takes its design cues from the unforgettable 48K, with its rubber keys and iconic rainbow stripe - but, as per VGC, its innards are a little more multi-generational, capable of emulating all the classic Spectrum variants: the 16K, 48K, Spectrum+ (AKA my first home computer), and 128K.

Notably, The Spectrum's rubber keyboard is fully functional, and there's support for a wide variety of USB controller devices, meaning purchasers have a decent number of options when it comes to playing its 48 bundled games - which include bona fide classics such as Head Over Heels, Jack the Nipper, Manic Miner, The Hobbit, Auf Wiedersehen Monty, and Skool Daze.

                      • Reuniting developer Massive Entertainment and its Snowdrop Engine technology, Star Wars Outlaws is a sprawling, bounty-hunting, TIE-fighter-battling adventure across a galaxy far, far away. It's built just for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Series S and PC - a true next-gen effort - and all of the highlights of this particular engine return.
Today I'm focusing on the console editions as ever, where PS5 and Series X each offer up a choice of three modes: a 30fps quality mode, a 40fps balanced mode (for 120Hz displays) and a 60fps performance mode. Much like Massive's work on Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, there's a real luxury of choice for the two premium machines here - even extending to a toggle for two seperate aspect ratio modes. However, the curveball is the Series S version, which is fixed at 30fps with no other modes on offer. Between all of these consoles and modes then, which is ultimately the best way to play? Are there any visual differences of note between the three? And is it possible to get a solid 60fps out of the game on PS5 or Series X?
Of course, this pairing of developer and technology is already a proven success. Only nine months ago, the team at Massive served up Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, using the Snowdrop Engine to realise another sci-fi world. Its open environments were richly detailed, filled with flora and fauna that reacted to the player, plus weather physics like wind and rain. It pushed for ray-traced global illumination and reflections, even on console, and again with PS5 and Series X able to the game with a 60fps target.

                        • Square Enix's Splatoon-a-like 4v4 multiplayer shooter Foamstars is transitioning from a premium title to a free-to-play game on 4th October, just eight months after its initial release.

Square announced the news in a brief update on its support website, noting the game - which remains a PlayStation exclusive after its free-to-play transition - will no longer require a PlayStation Plus subscription to play from 4th October.

Players that purchase Foamstars prior to its price change in October will receive a Legacy Gift set providing "exclusive" in-game items, including 12 colour-variant Bubble Beastie skins, one Slide Board design, and the "Legacy" title. "Your continued support of Foamstars would be greatly appreciated", Square adds.

                            • Today's double-feature of a Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase and Indie World brought a smattering of new announcements, as the Switch heads into its final Christmas.

The shows were light on any real bombshells, perhaps to be expected with Switch 2 on the horizon. But in their place there was still plenty to keep you busy over the coming six months, with eye-catching indie games, retro game collections and a wave of ports.

You can watch the full show below, or recap it announcement by announcement underneath.

                              • Digital Eclipse, the developer behind the likes of Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration and Llamasoft: The Jeff Minter Story, has unveiled another entry in its critically acclaimed series of interactive documentaries, this time focusing on legendary puzzler Tetris. It's called Tetris Forever, and it's coming to PC and "multiple" consoles this winter.

Tetris Forever is officially the third entry in Digital Eclipse's Gold Master Series - which includes Llamasoft: The Jeff Minter Story and last year's equally sumptuous The Making of Karateka - and it aims to tell the "true story of Tetris" as the puzzler celebrates its 40th birthday.

It'll feature 15 playable games from the series, "many" of which have never been released outside of Japan before. Versions include an "accurate recreation" of the first Tetris, which appeared on the Electronika 60, as well as the 1998 Famicon edition of Tetris, the multiplayer focused Tetris Battle Gaiden, Super Bombliss, Hatris, and more.
