  • Ubisoft has cut 45 staff across two of its North American studios, as part of its third round of redundancies so far this year.

The company has laid off workers at both Ubisoft San Francisco, the developer of XDefiant, and Red Storm Entertainment, which had been working on the now-cancelled The Division: Heartland live service game.

"Last week Ubisoft San Francisco and Red Storm Entertainment informed their teams of a restructuring that will result in 45 employees leaving Ubisoft," a spokesperson confirmed in a statement to Eurogamer.

    • Silent Hill 2 remains one of the all time survival horror greats - and its story of grief, framed by
fogged streets and flashlight lit corridors, remains as haunting today as on its initial release. All of which is to say, there's a lot riding on developer
Bloober Team to nail the details of its remake's atmosphere when it arrives on 8th October. To be
blunt, the team has had an uphill battle to inspire confidence in long-time Silent Hill fans, not
helped by a poorly pitched 'combat trailer' at Sony's State of Play in January that completely
missed the brief. Since then, later gameplay showings have put the remake's intentions in much
better light. And thankfully, in playing its opening three hours at a recent Konami event - from the
start right up to the first Pyramid Head boss - I am now much more positive about it. Despite my
worries going in, I'm glad the remake does even dare to make key changes to the game, complete
with new puzzles, updated combat, plus the promise of new, additional endings.
Before we get to that, a quick Digital Foundry-style aside. On booting the game there were two
graphics modes on PS5: a 30fps quality mode, and a performance mode that targets 60fps. Dynamic resolution appears to be used more aggressively for the latter, but I happily stuck with the
60fps option, which ran Silent Hill's south vale region and later Wood Side Apartment block
smoothly. The only problem spot was an early graveyard area - with its obvious sub-60 drops in
the build shown - but that might improve by release.
Speaking with the team at Bloober directly, it's
also confirmed that both modes use Unreal Engine 5's Lumen technology on PS5 - enhancing its reflections with a software-based approximation of ray tracing. The result being that
the rain-slicked streets reflect every shop sign crisply, even if they're out of your camera's view (a
problem for the SSR method, which is still used as a fallback behind Lumen here). Added to this the team confirms that Lumen is also used for ambient occlusion, albeit only on the 30fps quality mode. Also, for a bit of
fun, an additional 90s filter toggle is included in the remake's menus to change its colour grading to
more closely match the fade of the PS2 original's - if you're that way inclined.

      • A new "modern camera" mod is now available for Silent Hill 3 and Silent Hill 4: The Room on PC.
Modder ZealotTormunds has developed a mod that gives Silent Hill players both a first-person perspective and a more contemporary over-the-shoulder camera.
Both Silent Hill 3 and 4 typically use fixed camera angles. By freeing up these locked perspectives, Zealot provides players with the chance to get a closer look at the game's textures, enemies, and environments.

        • Just a month after its last free event, Star Citizen is free-to-play again, from now until 22nd August, 2024.
That means everyone can jump in and give the space sim a chance, as well as try out all "top 16 ships", "granting both green and grizzled pilots the ability to try out eligible ships before choosing which one to vote for" at this year's Ship Showdown event.
For the last few weeks, the community has been voting for their favourite ships and ground vehicles with their own "original creations", including videos, songs, photos, paintings, and more.

          • Sega's Eternal Champions is the next video game franchise to get a silver-screen adaptation.
Whilst it's hardly surprising that filmmakers are still rooting through video game catalogues for ideas, I can't say I had Sega's 1993 fighting game on my bingo card for the next series to be getting an adaptation.
However, according to Hollywood Reporter, that's exactly what's happening, with Jurassic World trilogy writer Derek Connolly set to write the live-action screenplay.

            • 15 minutes of Astro Bot has once again leaked online, giving us a premature peek at what to expect when the game releases on 6th September.
In news unlikely to surprise you, the video has already been removed from YouTube (although you can still find copies of it if you're prepared to go looking), but eagle-eyed fans nonetheless managed to get a peek at the main hub, as well as a sneaky glimpse at some of the bots we can expect.
If you'd prefer to keep everything a surprise, head back to the main page now. For those excited and happy for a little head's up, read on…

              • This week's DF Direct 'drops' a little early owing to a somewhat busy and congested week for us, and our usual two-hour-long chat show begins with a look at the Black Myth: Wukong benchmarking tool - and the fact that (when we filmed, at least), the developer had not shown any video footage of the PlayStation 5 version in action. Reviewers were told not to expect PS5 code pre-launch. However, yesterday, a short snippet of gameplay captured from the console did appear online, so we scrambled to take a look at it and append some thoughts about it to our show.
Let's talk about the footage itself, hailing from PlayStation China (though we picked it up from the developer's feed, which linked to IGN China instead). First of all, there are clear issues with the quality of the footage. The appearance of developer IP addresses in the top-right may suggest that the PS5's system level video recording system was used, which was then re-processed by YouTube's systems, creating a very muddy picture, heavy on compression artefacts. Even so, we can see that the game is targeting 60fps, albeit with some heavy hits to frame-rate when screen-filling effects present on-screen. Black Myth: Wukong as presented here doesn't have any screen-tearing.
Beyond that, it is difficult to tell you much more about the game when we have no context on how the clip was captured and what settings (assuming the console version has settings) it was using. To be honest, the murkiness of the footage has left me with more questions than answers - especially after carrying out performance analysis on the clip. It's not easy to gauge frame-rate from lossy video, but we've done it in the past with streaming services and the technique is pretty straightforward and boils down to manually scrolling through the clip frame by frame and marking up duplicates. In the process, we got to see how the game looks from one frame to the next and there's some evidence here to suggest that AMD FSR 3 frame generation is being used in this footage.

                • nDreams, the developer behind one of my all-time favourite VR titles, Synapse, has announced a new shooter game called Vendetta Forever during this week's VR Games Showcase.
If that wasn't cause for celebration enough, nDreams also released a short, Quest-exclusive demo for the game that I played through for this week's episode of VR Corner. In the video, you can see me play the Quest 3 version, but it will also be available on the Quest Pro, Quest 2 and the PS VR2 at some point in October.
So what is Vendetta Forever? Well the easiest way to describe it is a mash-up of Superhot and Pistol Whip, with some of the best aspects of both games cherry-picked and given a little twist to make them feel fresh and unique. The monochromatic-but-not-quite visuals are definitely more Pistol Whip-y, but the title screen is just full of those iconic Superhot reds, whites and blacks. Then there's the main menu, which is almost a carbon copy of Pistol Whip's, with mutator and level select options, alongside online leaderboards and a nice little shooting gallery area which is something Pistol Whip does lack.

                  • Ubisoft has updated the PC requirements for its upcoming Star Wars adventure, Star Wars Outlaws, and released a new teaser showing off what kind of performance PC players can expect when the game releases on 30th August.
Taking up a modest 65GB, the settings shouldn't be too punishing for those looking only to meet the minimum standards – although you will need to have DLSS or FSR – but those pushing for the "ultra" experience will need a decent rig.
                    Check out the details below:

"It's been a while since we added a new major feature, so we tried not to spoil the contents of this patch immediately," Poncle teased in the patch notes. "Hope it worked to keep the contents a bit of a surprise."
New additions include nine new extra achievements, a new challenge stage and relic, two new "special character skins", and five new Arcanas to spice up your experience.

                      • During Lockdown, the only thing more scarce than flour was Switch fitness game Ring Fit Adventure. It was the perfect thing at the perfect time: a game that provided a home workout in a period when you had to stay home. Strap the controller to you, grab the oversized resistance wheel thing, and get moving. Everyone wanted one, and the desire for it lingered long after Lockdown. Today, Ring Fit has sold more than 15m units - it's one of the most successful games on Switch. Nintendo sensed there was a market and Ring Fit proved it. And it's not just Nintendo: companies like Peloton, with its uber-expensive exercise bike and integrated workout platform, have shown people will pay significant amounts of money to gamify their fitness needs, and it's into this exact space a new challenger has arrived.
It's called Quell and it's currently £190, and I tried it this week and I really liked it. The topline thing you need to know is that it delivers a punishing workout. It's more intense than Ring Fit; after a short demo plus a 20-minute regular session, I was dripping sweat freely on the rug in Quell's smallish London office. There was no air conditioning - enough said. That's not to say Ring Fit can't be intense but it's generally a calmer experience. Quell is designed to push it up a notch.
The second thing to know is that Quell feels more actively gamey than Ring Fit, which I was quite surprised about. It's built with roguelike principles in mind, so you try to see how far you can get in the game but also build and customise a loadout as you go. Do you want this power or that one? That kind of thing. And then between runs, you equip the items you earned, affecting your power and statistics, adding a layer of role-playing game progression to the mix. "Real fitness. Real gaming," is the company's motto, so you get a sense of the areas it's trying to push on.

                          • The UK's Competition and Markets Authority has closed its investigation into Apple's in-app payment system "on the grounds of administrative priority".
In a statement posted to the gov.uk website, the CMA said it no longer considered the investigation a priority but stressed that the case's closure "does not constitute a decision by the CMA".
"The CMA will continue to monitor Apple's conduct in the market. Its decision to close the case on grounds of administrative priority does not prevent, pre-judge or fetter the CMA's ability, if appropriate, to open an investigation [...] in [the] future, or to take action in respect of the conduct considered as part of the investigation".

                            • Final Fantasy 16's director Hiroshi Takai has said it's "possible" and "probably even likely" that future series entries will launch day one on PC, rather than further down the road from their console counterparts.
In conversation with GamesRadar+, Takai spoke about Final Fantasy 16's upcoming PC debut, and the time between its arrival and the PS5 release. Final Fantasy 16 first released as a PlayStation console exclusive last year, with the PC version promised when it was ready.
"Naturally, we wanted to get the PC version into players' hands as quickly as we possibly could," Takai told the publication. "We don't get anything out of delaying its release either."

                              • Atsuko Tanaka, the Japanese voice of Bayonetta, has passed away after an unnamed illness she had lived with for more than a year. She was 61 years of age.

The news of her passing was shared by her son Hikaru Tanaka on social media earlier this week. He said she "fought... with grace, humour and strength" during her illness.

"I believe it was a life that was truly characteristic of Atsuko Tanaka," her son wrote (translated by Anime Corner). "I feel truly blessed to have had such a proud mother."
