  • Flaming Fowl Studios - the developer that announced then shelved a game on the same day back in April amid financial difficulties - has unveiled its latest project, a comedic sci-fi auto battler called Konfronto that's due to release on PC later this year.

Flaming Fowl, which was founded in 2016 by former members of original Fable developer Lionhead Studios, first made a name for itself with the release of card battle Fable Fortune, but it's perhaps known for its acclaimed digital adaptation of popular board game Gloomhaven.

The studio's third release, a co-op RPG with turn-based combat called Ironmarked, was revealed back in April, but it wasn't exactly a moment for celebration. Instead, Flaming Fowl's unusual announcement came with the news the project was being shelved due to a current lack of funding in the industry, and worse, that it had been forced to lay off around 20 people at the studio. The hope was Ironmarked's announcement and accompanying demo would be a way to demonstrate the team's work and help them find jobs elsewhere.

    • With Dragon Age: The Veilguard's October release looming, BioWare is starting to discuss the finer details of its latest fantasy RPG. And its newest deep-dive provides a look at how progression will work for protagonist Rook and the companions they'll meet along the way.

Rook's progression systems won't, it has to be said, be much of a surprise to anyone that's had even the faintest brush with a video game in the last decade. Players do stuff, earn XP, gain a new Skill Point each level, then spend them to unlock new abilities on a skill tree.

BioWare's latest blog post does, however, go a little deeper into the minutiae of things - explaining, for instance, that the biggest experience boost comes from completing quests, although there's still XP to be earn from combat and exploration. Of more interest, though, are the particulars of Dragon Age: The Veilguard's skill tree.

      • Concord, Sony's floundering 5v5 hero shooter, has now officially gone offline just two weeks after its PS5 and PC launch - its short life abruptly ending with an undignified "error" message.

Concord was unveiled last May as part of former PlayStation boss Jim Ryan's optimistically expansive push into live-service gaming. Unfortunately for Sony and developer Firewalk Studios, Concord's launch this August failed to make much of an impact - player numbers were less-than-stellar, and subsequent reports claimed only around 25,000 copies had been sold.

Still, it was a bit of a shock when Sony announced it was pulling the plug on Concord earlier this week so soon after release, Firewalk admitting "our initial launch didn't land" and confirming Concord would be taken offline today. And its life - in its current guise, at least - is now officially at an end; servers went down a little before 7pm this evening in the UK, presenting players with nothing more than a terse "error" message and instructions on how to refund the game.

        • With Starfield's Shattered Space expansion just weeks away from release, Bethesda has been teasing some of the things players can expect to find when House Va'ruun's homeward of Va'ruun'kai opens for business on 30th September.

"Thank you to the millions of players who have made the Settled Systems their home and helped make this an incredible first year for Starfield", Bethesda wrote in a post on social media, before turning its attention to those pre-launch teases.

First up is the reveal Shattered Space's new planet of Va'ruun'kai will be something for explorers to get stuck into, featuring "over 50 locations to discover" - one of which, as we learned during Gamescom, will be House Va'ruun's capital city of Dazra.

          • We all already know Astro Bot has a lot of bots, but what bots has Astro Bot not got? There's a lot to spot! (Actually, it's not that many, I just got a little carried away.)
To answer that question, we now have a look at some concept art for PlayStation's new platformer. Please be aware of some small Astro Bot spoilers below.
As shared by VGC, concept art for Astro Bot featured at least two cameos that didn't make it into the final game. These are Sweet Tooth - Twisted Metal's insane killer clown who drives an ice cream truck - and Fat Princess from the Fat Princess franchise.

            • This week on the Eurogamer Newscast, we discuss the most dramatic few days for PlayStation in recent times.

Sony's stunning decision to kill off live-service shooter flop Concord after less than two weeks sent shockwaves around the industry, setting a new precedent for how swiftly a troubled title from a major publisher could be given the axe. After eight years of work, the game has already disappeared from sale, and will soon vanish from people's game libraries, with refunds automatically given. It's a remarkable move - even if Concord does somehow get a second lease of life - and another nail in the coffin for Sony's overly-ambitious live-service plans that have already seen other projects shelved and delayed.
And yet Sony has still ended this week on something of a high - riding a wave of love for Astro Bot, the company's platforming platform mascot and star of an excellent new game, and subtly-teasing one of the worst-kept secrets in video games right now: the imminent announcement of its souped-up PlayStation 5 Pro. Joining me this week are Eurogamer's Ed Nightingale, Victoria Kennedy and Vikki Blake, as we dissect the week, discuss what might be next for Concord, and where PlayStation goes from here.

              • Arrowhead Game Studios has detailed the first batch of balance changes and improvements it's bringing to Helldivers 2 later this month as part of the 60-day improvement plan it recently announced amid a significant player backlash to the sci-fi shooter's latest major update.

Arrowhead committed to improvements back in August following the launch of Helldivers 2's Escalation of Freedom update. Despite some welcome headline additions - including new mission objectives and enemies - the update drew significant ire among fans for its controversial balance changes and nerfs. Helldivers 2's reviews are currently "mostly negative" on Steam.

With player frustration continuing to grow, Arrowhead released a statement acknowledging its update "didn't hit [its] target", and committing to a 60-day plan of action that would see it addressing "some things we just didn't get right" and "other more fundamental inconsistencies in our approach to game balance and game direction." And now, the studio has announced the first batch of changes it's making as part of its promise to improve the experience.

                • Silent Hill 2 Remake will feature the option to remove all UI elements and add on a "90s filter".
Developer Bloober Team confirmed the news in a recent X/Twitter post, revealing that the 90s filter includes grain effect, colour correction, and screen adjustments for that "old-school experience"... even though Silent Hill 2 released in 2001.
The ability to remove UI elements will likely be welcome news for veteran Silent Hill fans, as that is entirely in keeping with the original game.

                  • Shinji Mikami thought Tango Gameworks would be safe from closure "as long as they continued to make Hi-Fi Rush games".
Mikami, who spoke to IGN alongside Suda 51, was the founder of Tango Gameworks but left in February 2023. The studio was then closed by Microsoft earlier this year, before being acquired by PUBG publisher Krafton last month.
"I had thought the studio would be safe as long as they continued to make Hi-Fi Rush games," said Mikami. "That's one of the reasons I left Tango Gameworks. So I was surprised when the studio was closed down."

                    • Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi is once again back with Square Enix, over 20 years since leaving the company in 2003 shortly after the release of Final Fantasy X-2. Since then, when he's not busy playing Final Fantasy 14, Sakaguchi has been making games with his studio Mistwalker: that includes the likes of Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, and an impressive Apple Arcade exclusive called Fantasian.
But it's exclusive no more, with Square Enix stepping in to publish Fantasian Neo Dimension, a new port of the game for PC and consoles. It's a game that's already steeped in Final Fantasy history: designed by Sakaguchi as a natural extension of his work on the series, with music from Final Fantasy composer Nobuo Uematsu. This new version of the game bolsters that further with its battle music selector featuring pieces from throughout series history.
Now, Fantasian's heroes can battle enemies to the classic theme of the pixel remasters, or something more modern: Final Fantasy 14, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, or Final Fantasy 16, for instance. It's a cute addition that brings Fantasian and Final Fantasy full circle.

                      • Yesterday, Larian released Patch 7 for Baldur's Gate 3 on PC. This patch sorts out some lingering bugs and adds a number of new features to the game, including additional evil ending cinematics (more on those in a moment).
This patch also added official mod support to the PC version of the game, with the aim to get this patch onto consoles and Mac sometime next month.
However, if you are a PC player who wants to hold off updating their copy of Baldur's Gate 3 with this recent patch for whatever reason, you can do just that.

                        • Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 publisher Focus Entertainment has clarified players do not need to link their Steam account to Epic Games in order to play the game.
When launching the game on Steam, an Epic Online Services client is installed once the game's EULA (End User Licence Agreement) is accepted. This is to support optional crossplay between players on both platforms and to synchronise friend lists between them, Focus confirmed in a forum post.
"However, please be aware linking your Steam and Epic accounts is not required to enjoy the game," the company wrote. "These features are entirely optional and will not affect your gameplay experience in any way."

                          • Phasmophobia's price is increasing from £10.99 to a very precise £16.75 ($20/€19.50) later today, 6th September.
The team says it feels "like this is a fair increase based on the amount of content and playtime added to the game since Early Access started almost four years ago".
"Thank you to all the dedicated Ghost Hunters worldwide for your ongoing support. We’re excited to welcome new recruits when Phasmophobia is released on PS5, PS VR2, and Xbox Series X|S later this year."

                            • Remedy is set to update its original version of Alan Wake on PC, removing David's Bowie's Space Oddity from the credits in the process.
This, the developer has said, is due to "changes in licensing". Once this update goes live, players will instead be met with an original song by Petri Alanko, known as Strange Moons.
Alanko has also composed music for a number of Remedy's other games, including Alan Wake 2 and Control.

                              • This week we've been celebrating Eurogamer's 25th anniversary by looking back at some of the games and the people that have shaped our past quarter century. We've also been recommending our favourite games you can play right now, with The Eurogamer 100. Now, however, we invite you for a look at the future of video games - written not by us, but the people who are actually going to be building it.
Where will the world of video games be in another 25 years? It's a topic that seems intrinsically linked to where the world will be in 25 years. The prevalence of AI, the growth of cloud systems and the continued improvement in VR/AR technology all loom large - but there's also real positivity here for the the future of our favourite medium as it continues to mature.
A huge thank you to everyone who contributed!
