Seagate Launches 'Video 2.5 HDD' for 24/7 Video Applications

A new hard drive for DVRs promises quiet operation and high reliability.

Seagate on Thursday announced its new Video 2.5 HDD, a 2.5-inch hard drive (as its name implies) designed specifically for around-the-clock video applications, such as digital video recorders (DVRs), set-top boxes (STBs), and surveillance applications. Building a reliable drive was Seagate's primary focus, and the company claims its new HDD has an annual failure rate of just 0.55.
It was built to withstand the rigors of 24/7 applications, including extended temperature ranges. Seagate also said it enhanced the drive's acoustic properties for near silent operation.
"We pioneered the HDD video market more than a decade ago and as such are leveraging our vast knowledge of this technology to bring consumers the most reliable video drive in the world," said Scott Horn, Seagate vice president of Marketing. "The CE industry has extremely specific criteria and needs when it comes to storage and the Video 2.5 HDD is built to meet and exceed their rigorous demands."
Seagate's Video 2.5 HDD is available in 250GB (up to 19 ours of supported video recording), 320GB (up to 24 hours), and 500GB (up to 38 hours) capacities. Home entertainment manufacturers have access to one- and two-disk setups, for up to 1TB total. All three feature a SATA 3Gbps interface and 16MB of cache, and support up to 12 simultaneous HDTV streams.
