  • Dell Shows off the Worlds First Truly Wireless WiGig Docking Solution

It’s expensive, but it's also an exciting glimpse at the future Intel is hoping for with WiGig

Modern day Ultrabooks are powerful enough that only the most hardened enthusiasts require anything bigger, however working with a larger display, and with a proper mouse and keyboard is almost always the way to go. For those seeking an easy dock solution when they return to the office, look no further than Dell’s Latitude 6430u, paired with the world’s first commercially available WiGig dock.
The Dell Wireless Dock D5000 can handle speeds up to 4.6Gbps, and operates on the new 802.11ad standard. 802.11ad operates on the 60GHz band, and is ideal for high throughput, at the expense of range. As a docking solution, it looks really slick. The dock has the option of falling back on the 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies if you move out of range, but expect to take a significant performance hit in the processes.
According to Dell the dock is: "Designed for use in offices, meeting rooms and classrooms, the Dell Wireless Dock offers quick and easy connectivity to displays, projectors, networks, speakers and other peripherals for unparalleled connectivity and convenience," Dell's announcement said. "The new dock supports up to two external displays with both DisplayPort and HDMI, features ample peripheral connectivity via three USB 3.0 ports and facilitates easy collaboration with a front Audio In/Out port for voice over IP at speeds of up to 4.6 gigabits per second. The Dell Wireless Dock can also be easily managed connect with the updated Dell Connection Manager that now supports both WiGig and Wireless LAN settings."
The dock is a $187 add-in when ordered with a new Latitude 6430u, or $270 if ordered after the fact. It’s expensive to be sure, but it also offers an exciting glimpse into the future for our mobile devices. Pair this up with a wireless charging mat, and suddenly you have the almost perfect docking solution for your portable computing devices.
