Redbox Instant is now an official player in the streaming game now that it's open to the general public. The movie streaming site is a joint venture by Coinstar and Verizon, giving the service a fair bit of financial backing and marketing muscle, though the first order of business should be to beef up its catalog of titles. At launch, Redbox Instant offers around 4,600 titles, far less than competitors like Netflix and Amazon Prime.
You can sign up for a 1-month free trial, and after that, service starts at $8 per month. That gives you unlimited, instant streaming, plus four DVD credits each month to use at any of the 34,600 Redbox kiosks. Each credit is good for a single overnight DVD rental, and if you return the move a day late, it just uses another credit. For $9 per month, you get the same service/benefits, but are allowed to use the credits on Blu-ray discs instead of DVDs.
So, where can you stream Redbox Instant titles?
"We're all about devices, lots of them – included! And more to come! Grab the Redbox Instant App on all your devices to browse and stream movies away from your computer. We have most Android phones, iPhones and tablets covered, at 3G, 4G or by Wi-Fi. (By the way, if your wireless carrier isn't Verizon, it's perfectly OK!) And if you'll be going offline for a while, use the app to download a title or two in advance. Save it on your device to watch later!," Redbox Instant explains.
You can also rent or buy titles via Redbox Instant. Prices vary by title, though for a newer flick, it typically runs $5 or $6 (HD) for a rental and $17 or $22 (HD) to buy. When you rent a title, you have 30 days to start watching and then a 48-hour window to watch it as many times as you want.
