  • Acer Considers Launching a 7.9-inch Jelly Bean Tablet for $149

The next tablet from Acer could be ultra cheap.

We have a couple of rumors to report on. The first is that Acer is prepping an Iconia A1-810 tablet model to compete with Apple's iPad mini device, our sister site TechRadar reports. It's a 7.9-inch slate with a 1024x768 resolution, 1.2GHz quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, 5MP rear-facing camera, and 0.3MP front-facing camera all wrapped in Google's Android 4.2 Jelly Bean platform. The biggest surprise, however, could be the price.
The current plan is sell the slate for $250, but news and rumor site Digitimes has heard from sources in the upstream supply chain that Acer is thinking about chopping the MSRP to $149. What's more, Digitimes has identified the display as an in-plane switching (IPS) panel. IPS displays have come down in price over the past year, though it would still be a feat if Acer could squeeze one into a $149 tablet.
If so, it would put increased competitive pressure on Apple's iPad mini, which normally sells for $329 (Walmart recently dropped the price to $299). Should Apple launch a successor, the original iPad mini could conceivably drop to around $250ish, which might be a reason Acer is considering an ultra-aggressive price point for the A1-810.
