Your Phablet Looks Small Next to Samsung's Galaxy Mega

Samsung's Galaxy Mega stretches the boundaries of phablet design.

You better have big pockets if you have any notion of treating Samsung's Galaxy Mega device as a smartphone. It's actually a phablet -- a phone and tablet hybrid -- though even in that category, the Galaxy Mega stands out because of its massive 6.3-inch HD display. That's not a typo; the Galaxy Mega's display is 6.3 inches, or just over half-an-inch smaller than a Nexus 7 or Kindle Fire HD.
Despite the large screen, Samsung points out the chassis is "ultra-thin and portable enough to put into a pocket or hold in one hand." Skeptical over that claim? Don't worry, Samsung also announced a smaller 5.8-inch version "for users seeking the same great tablet features" in a more compact form factor.
Both versions pack a rather pedestrian dual-core processor, the 6.3-inch model running at 1.7GHz and the 5.8-inch SKU clocked at 1.4GHz. Other shared features include 1.5GB of RAM, a microSD card slot, 8MP rear-facing camera, 1.9MP front-facing camera, and Android 4.2 Jelly Bean coated with Samsung's TouchWiz UI.
The larger model sports an HD 720p display, 4G LTE connectivity, 8GB and 16GB internal storage options, 3,200mAh battery, and a slightly thinner frame at 8mm versus 9mm. Samsung's 5.8-inch model features a qHD display (960x540), HSPA+ connectivity, 8GB of internal storage, and a 2,600mAh battery.
Europe and Russia will get first crack at the Galaxy Mega devices beginning in May, with a gradual rollout to other territories thereafter. No word on price.
