      • Sorry fans of the Nintendo shop music circa the Wii era, but we won't be getting a catchy jingle to shop along to on the Switch 2's release this summer. And it doesn't seem likely the music will be coming back in the future either.

        • Nintendo has rarely been forthcoming about the technical specifications of its consoles, giving only the minimum of details and - quite rightly, some might say - focusing on the games themselves. It makes sense, bearing in mind that the firm exited the console specs arms race with the Wii back in 2006. The pattern continues with Switch 2 and its core processor with only the Nvidia partnership confirmed and by extension, the fact that the new machine has both machine learning capabilities (hello, DLSS!) and hardware-accelerated ray tracing. So how much horsepower does the machine have? How does it compare to, say, PlayStation 4 or Steam Deck?

            • Nintendo has sought to justify its bumper £75/$80 price tag for Mario Kart World, and pointed to the lower cost of fellow Switch 2 big hitter Donkey Kong Bananza as evidence it had not established a new, more expensive "benchmark".

                  • One of the things video games do really well is absence - specifically recent absence. Dump me into a game world and give me enough clues that someone else has just left and I'll be happy for hours. A cigar still sending up a ribbon of smoke from an overflowing ashtray, the wind plucking at a curtain where a window has been left just slightly open, a microwave that has some kind of horrible lasagne in it that's still - jeepers - giving off a hint of steam? Games are brilliant at this kind of Marie Celeste set-up. Instant mystery. I don't need actual people around. I just want to know who, what, why?

                          • Last week's Switch 2 reveal might have had its exciting bits but it also brought its share of controversy too. There was the cost of the console itself, the cost of its games, or the perhaps surprising decision to charge owners for Switch 2's Welcome Tour tutorial game instead of including it for free - a decision Nintendo of America's Bill Trinen has now addressed, saying the newly confirmed $10 USD price reflects the "amount of care and work" put into it.

                            • Nintendo has pushed back at suggestions Switch 2's price - which has already left some fans reeling - was influenced by early US trade tariffs. But it admits the latest round of tariffs introduced by US president Trump last week are "something we're going to have to address".
