Plextor Readies Performance Enhancing Firmware for M5 Pro SSD

New firmware for Plextor's M5 Pro SSDs provides a free performance boost.

Wouldn't it be awesome if, after buying a new sports car, the dealership called you in for a free tuneup that netted you additional horsepower? Unfortunately, life doesn't always work that way, just don't tell that to Plextor. The former optical drive player that now concentrates its efforts on solid state drives (SSDs) just announced the availability of its 100K Extreme firmware update for its M5 Pro SSD line.
As the name suggests, the firmware boosts performance by increasing random read/write performance to 100,000/88,000 IOPS, up from 94,000/86,000 IOPS when using the original firmware. It also gooses sequential write throughput to 470MB/s, up from 450MB/s before applying the new firmware (sequential read performance is the same at up to 540MB/s).
"When we set out to build the M5 Pro, we wanted to redefine professional standards for mean time between failures and data protection, rather than describe our existing levels as being professional. But what we’re finding is that a wide range of users from the enterprise market to hardcore gamers love the M5 Pro. Following the success of the drive we thought that we should reward our many users and add to the holiday joy by asking our firmware team to push the M5 Pro’s performance even higher. After all being a true professional doesn’t mean your performance shouldn’t be at the extreme," commented Minnie Lin, Marketing Manager.
