AMD Announces Elite A-Series "Richland" APUs

Richand comes at just the right time for mobile users.

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) today announced the availability of its new Elite A-Series Accelerated Processing Units (APUs), otherwise known as "Richland." The new APUs not only offer faster graphics performance and longer battery life via enhanced power management capabilities all on a single chip, they also deliver user experiences like facial log-in and gesture recognition, AMD says.
"The high performance AMD A-Series APU continues to impress with its ability to deliver stunning graphics and immersive experiences with even more battery life. Our engineers have done a superb job of increasing processor performance while decreasing power consumption," said Bernd Lienhard, corporate vice president and general manager of AMD’s Client Business Unit. "With the capabilities built into our 2013 AMD Elite A-Series APUs, including new software for gesture control, facial recognition, rich entertainment and more lifelike gaming, we are delivering an ever richer experience to end users and our customers."
The first quarter of 2013 will see the release of four new Richland parts, including:

• A10-5750M: 2.5GHz-3.5GHz, 4MB L2 cache, DDR3-1866 support, Radeon HD 8650G graphics (720MHz/533MHz)
• A8-5500M: 2.1GHz-3.1GHz, 4MB L2 cache, DDR3-1600 support, Radeon HD 8550G graphics (720MHz/515MHz)
• A6-5350M: 2.9GHz-2.5GHz, 1MB L2 cache, DDR3-1600 support, Radeon HD 8450G graphics (720MHz/533MHz)
• A4-5150M: 2.7GHz-3.3GHz, 1MB L2 cache, DDR3-1600 support, Radeon HD 8350G graphics (720MHz/514MHz)

All four chips have a 35W TPD rating. The A10-5750M and A8-5550M APUs are quad-core chips, while the other two are dual-core parts.
No word yet on price, though they're not meant to be sold as consumer chips. These are slices of silicon that will be found in next generation ultrathin notebooks.
