  • With Call of Duty: Black Ops 6's October launch on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC inching ever-closer, Activision Blizzard has announced a fresh set of dates for players' diaries, confirming it'll be hosting a multiplayer open beta this September, with those eligible for early access (which includes Game Pass subcribers) able to hop in one week prior.

Black Ops 6's multiplayer open beta - that is, the actually open beta, accessible to all players on all platforms - starts 6pm BST/10am PT, 6th September to 9th September. It'll let participants check out the game's Omnimovement system (which basically lets you run in any direction, not just forward), a variety of brand-new Treyarch-built maps across a number of squad-enabled modes, a non-specific selection of weapons, equipment, and Perks, plus loadout building.

As for the not-quite-so-open "early access" beta, that kicks off a week earlier, running from 6pm BST/10am PT on 30th August and concluding on 4th September. This initial session is only open to players who've pre-ordered the game on their respective platforms (there's no platform-exclusivity this time around) and to Game Pass subscribers.

      • UK spending on video games plummeted by 29.4 percent during the first half of this year, while music and video sales grew.

Physical game sales fell by 40 percent to £111.7m compared to the first six months of 2023, while digital download sales fell 23 percent to £236.9m.

The numbers, reported by the Digital Entertainment and Retail Association (ERA), reflect a "soft new release schedule", according to its latest report.

        • It's summer, the season of occasional sun (hello from the UK) and seemingly ceaseless video game discounts - and up next is Sony, promising price reductions on over 4500 digital titles during its newly launched PlayStation Store Summer Sale.

PlayStation's summer sale is now live and runs for the next four weeks, coming to a close on Wednesday, 14th August. During that time, you'll find discounts - some fairly sizeable - across PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 games, DLC, and other digital products.

Elden Ring, for instance, currently has 30 percent off, meaning you can pick it up for £34.99 rather than the usual £49.99. Other big names with decent discounts include Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (45 percent off), Sea of Thieves (30 percent off), Alan Wake 2 (35 percent off), Resident Evil 4 Remake (25 percent off), Red Dead Redemption 2 (65 percent off), Amored Core 6 (30 percent off), and Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, which is reduced by 35 percent.

          • Amazon's Fallout TV adaptation, which drew significant acclaim from critics and attention from audiences when it was broadcast back in April, has been nominated for 16 Emmy Awards, across categories including Outstanding Drama Series and Best Actor.

This year's 76th Emmy Awards, which are hosted by the US Academy of Television Arts & Sciences to recognise excellence in American primetime television programming, will be held this September. They'll be the second Emmy Awards in 2024, after the last year's ceremony was delayed due to the writers' and actors' strikes.

With votes now tallied and nominations announced, it's clear Amazon's Fallout TV adaptation has made an impression among academy members, garnering 17 nominations across 16 award categories. It's an impressive number but notably still somewhere behind this year's biggest hitters; FX's Shogun leads with 25 nominations, followed by The Bear at 23, Only Murders in the Building with 21, and True Detective: Night Country at 19.

            • Paramount+ has officially cancelled its divisive live-action Halo television series, with the recently broadcast second season set to be its last on the service.

Season 1 of Paramount+'s Halo series aired back in 2022, nearly a decade after the project was first announced. It launched to a mixed reception, however, drawing criticism for its writing, inconsistent tone, uneven plotting, and pacing. Halo fans also didn't love the decision to show Master Chief's face just episodes in, or the decision to show his bum after that. And by the time he was having sex in front of Cortana, even Halo's co-creator admitted he was "confused".

Despite these concerns, initial audience numbers were good, and Paramount+ made the decision to forge ahead with a second season, albeit this time under the watch of a new show runner. And improvements were promised: Master Chief actor Pablo Schreiber (who also wasn't a fan of some of the first season's more controversial choices) said there was "no question" Season 2 was "far stronger" ahead of its airing this February.

              • Following a bit of a tease at least year's BlizzCon, Blizzard has given Overwatch 2's 41st hero the full reveal treatment. And that's not all! Juno, as the shooter's new Martian space ranger is known, is available to play right now for a limited-time.

When Blizzard first teased Juno last year, she was known only by the codename Space Ranger. It was, however, confirmed, she'd be Overwatch's first Martian character, as well as a "highly mobile support hero". Eight months later and we now have a much clearer idea of who Juno is and what she can do, thanks to a brand-new gameplay trailer showcasing her core abilities.

Sporting a kind of retro futuristic look, complete with jet-infused roller-boots and a ray gun, Juno leans heavily on speedy traversal. Her passive Martian Overboots ability can be triggered while airborne, enabling her to hover for a limited time, and it can be paired with her Glide Boost, which lets her glide horizontally with increased movement speed.

                • Pleasingly bizarre four-wheeled survival game Pacific Drive has officially sold 600K copies, and its developer Ironwood Studios has announced it's celebrating that milestone with a series of content updates throughout the rest of this year. And the first of those updates is now live, offering a bunch of free additions, as well as a bit of daft cosmetic DLC.

Pacific Drive's first free update lets players document their travels across the anomaly riddled forests of the Olympic Exclusion Zone using a new photo mode. It's available right from the pause menu and gives player access to various camera settings - including depth of field, focus control, and exposure - as well as numerous aesethetic filters. It's also possible to change weather conditions and time of day while you're in there.

Photo mode arrives alongside the new Juke Jet car ability which, once mounted on your station wagon's side rack, provides a horizontal boost that should be handy for dodging and drifting. There're also two new upgrade nodes to be found in the garage's Fabrication Station, unlocking the Smart Matter Deconstructor and Vargas Auto-Pac-Vac. The first lets players toss junk into the Matter Constructor from anywhere in the garage, while the latter deposits materials into the transfer trunk before being filling the rest of the vacuum storage.

                  • Warframe developer Digital Extremes has given us another peek at its upcoming free-to-play fantasy action-MMORPG, Soulframe.
Back in July 2022, Digital Extremes unveiled its first new property since Warframe's release back in 2013. Besides a 30-minute gameplay teaser this time last year, though, we've seen very little else, but today DE has given us a closer look during the TennoCon 2024 fan convention this weekend.
You can check it out towards the beginning of today's mammoth livestream:

                      • Warframe's been fully embracing its weird side over the course of its last couple of expansions, but if you thought its mood-world westerns and long-lost dimension-shifting labs were as far as the free-to-play shooter was willing to go, then you might want to brace yourself: developer Digital Extremes has revealed first gameplay of its upcoming 1999 story expansion and, well, let's just say you get to go into space to kill a 90s boyband.

We've known 1999 was likely to be an odd 'un ever since its tease at last year's TennoCon utterly stole the show - catapulting players away from Warframe's usual far-future sci-fi aesthetic to an eerily familiar Earth-like world of grungy subways stations and retro tech. And now, with TennoCon 2024 underway, Digital Extremes has shared more on its audacious new expansion.

To get a few burning questions out of the way first, yes it's really set in 1999 (New Year's Eve to be exact) and no, this isn't quite the Earth we know - but it's close enough, full of extremely familiar era-appropriate artefacts that feel gleefully incongruous within Warframe's wider world. And that starts with 1999's new hub area: an abandoned 90s shopping mall full of artificial palm trees, arcade machines, and screens belching out cheesy infomercials.

Whilst it's barely a minute long, the trailer offers a peek at a "stealth mission" and shows how "Zaun's finest [...] makes sneaking back into your lab look good".

                          • Stormind Games has shared a ten-minute teaser for its upcoming horror, A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead.
Our friends at IGN captured ten minutes of hitherto unseen gameplay in which, on Day 119, the player fights to escape through the air ducts of an old building. It is dark, atmospheric, and absolutely terrifying in equal measure.

                            • A "leaked" trailer of Guilty Gear Strive's fourth season has popped up online.
Initially, the video was seemingly stumbled upon as a live, if unlisted, upload on YouTube. As soon as the news spread, however, the video was swiftly marked private… but not before about a dozen people uploaded it to their own channels, and many others grabbed a handful of informative screenshots.
The news below may include spoilers, so please only proceed if you're happy to have the surprises ruined!

                              • The internet was all in a flap last week after Microsoft promised to place Deadpool's pert posterior into the hands of a lucky few by way of a new limited edition controller. But if red spandex doesn't do it for you, there's now a second superhero butt in town, courtesy of a bright yellow, Wolverine-themed Xbox Wireless Controller.

Both controllers (as you've probably already guessed) have been created to promote Marvel's upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine movie, which arrives in cinemas across the world later this week. And to coincide with its release, there's a global sweepstake going on at the moment via Twitter/X for anyone wanting to get their hands on those superbuns.

Full rules can be found on Microsoft's website, but the gist is you'll need to follow the official Xbox account then repost one of its designated promotional posts containing the hashtag #xboxcheekycontrollersweepstakes before the competition closes on 11th August.
